Week 1 post 3
A concept that intrigued me in the Chapter 1 reading was about the way Aristotle's school was described. It sounded like the way our educational system should be and is often something I talk about in my life. Of course I would take out the part on women not being able to attend school. But Aristotle's school sounds beautiful. I liked how one would have to rise early and had a "paidagogos" that made sure one didn't miss class. I used to cut classes like crazy when I was younger because they were so incredibly boring! But if I had someone who influenced me and reminded me of why I would go to class every single day, life would have been allot easier. It's almost as if Aristotle understood we can't do everything on our own. At times we are weak human beings and when we are we need other peoples help. I think in America we seriously lack asking for help and its caused us a lot of problems. Also his school is described like it was really connected to nature. In the book it is mentioned that Aristotle used to walk with his students along pathways called "peripatos". I wish to god we would do something like that in school. I bet so many students would love to walk and discuss things instead of sitting in a "box" with no fresh air and uncomfortable desks. I also like what we used to learn back during that time. Nowadays high school and junior high is so incredibly dull that I really believed I had better things to do. I would of love to learn about life, and persuasive speaking and how it can affect our world if we learned it.

Hi Ray-Ray!
ReplyDeleteI think you are right about Aristotle's school system. I too found that part of the book interesting because their way of education seems to hold more in-depth ideas and made you think about your surroundings. It is hard in today's education system where school is not liked by many students and they just want to "have fun." Of course we can enjoy our time aside from school, but students can be hard to motivate when they are not interested in the topics they're taught. I also loved the idea of a "paidagogos" because they are like our very own walking, talking, human alarm clock! I think that America is seen as this independent nation and each individual want to strive for the best. If this is the case, then we would be lacking help because no one would want to ask for it. To some people, asking for help might be a sign of weakness, but like you said, not everything can be done on your own. I think life does have a lot to offer and learning more about it will only increase our knowledge. Take small steps day by day and when the time comes, we will all realize how many steps we took to become who we are in this world.
I thought it was interesting how Ray- Ray wrote about how Aristotle’s school was described because to me it also seem liked a very fascinating school. It seemed like the idea Ivy League school, almost like Harvard or something. When I think about school might have been like in that century, I picture a roman pillars, and instead of chairs there would be just long marble pillars on the ground, stacked up like a movie theater so when the teacher spoke, it would echo to everyone so they could hear what is being said. In the end Aristotle’s school sounds like the perfect school where everyone yearned to learn and that’s how others schools should try to be now
ReplyDeleteRay-Ray,
ReplyDeleteI like which concept you chose. I do agree that Aristotle’s school sounds amazing with addition to women! It seems as though Aristotle had thought of absolutely everything that every student would need to succeed in life. Nowadays we call our “paidagogos” as role models or motivator. But I totally agree with you that in our society we do not ask for help even when needed. Many people think that if they ask for help they are showing their weakness. Unfortunately in our society no middle school or high school teacher has the time to actually assist us all in life. I recall so many of my teachers pushing us out the door when we asked for help all they cared about was getting rid of us. I do also believe if we had an Aristotle in all school our society and economy would be so much better off! Thank you so much for writing about this and bringing up new thoughts on this great job and good luck with the rest of the semester.
