question 1 discussion 6

I do not think it is possible to perceive others without judging or categorizing them. I think this is because we has humans want to protect ourselves if we can and so judging and categorizing helps us do that at times. I do think however that you do not have to change yourself, just because of a judgement you have made or a category you put someone in. For example, lets say I met a girl who was blond, had a high pitch voice and dressed like she was looking for some attention. My judgement might be to not trust this girl because I would be assuming her to be a bimbo of some sort. Because there is no real way of telling if someone is good or bad forever, then I believe we shouldn't be waisting our time being a jerk to people based off of our own judgements. Even if the girl is a bimbo or isn't one, why should it matter to me? She has the right to live her life just as I have the right to live my own, so just because I judge her doesn't mean I need to change myself when I am around her. I call that giving someone your power. Why am I going to give someone I don't truly know or have any deep relationship with my good time? I think that is the message we are missing in this world. It is OK to judge and categorize to be aware of things, but don't ruin what your about just because of who they are.

  1. Ray-Ray,
I agree with you on your post, I feel that by judging others and perceiving them differently makes us feel better about ourselves and gives us security. I like how you said that we do not have to change ourselves after a judgment has been done. The example made me think more about the idea and what we say or think about people and how it makes us act differently towards people. The last sentence was a good ending to this post, I felt that it’s true, why should we have to ruin ourselves because someone else stands out to be something we don’t like.

  2. I loved how you said that a blonde girl with a high pitched voice and dresses like she wants attention could be a bimbo! I laughed out loud!

I agree with your post for the most part because I too, feel that we as humans cannot help ourselves when we see or meet people for the first time. We pre-judge all the time whether it be a negative or positive thing.

On another note, I do not completely agree with you when you say that you do not need to change yourself when judgement has already been made. I feel that we as humans have room to grow and we can improve ourselves byu assessing how we can be wrong sometimes. What if that bimbo in your example dresses the way she dresses because as an INDIVIDUAL she feels it is comfortable for her to wear clothing like that. What if she is not a bimbo? What if she has a college degree in Kinesiology/Nursing/Health Science and dresses that way because she is in a relationship and her significant other likes it when she dresses that way and she wants to spice things up in their relationship. Maybe it turns out that the two of you have the exact same interests and could be BFF's? These are things we do not know just by looking at her. Reserving judgement is impossible but being better at doing it is something we can all do. An open mind is more beneficial to us all, especially when it comes to people we do not know, who knows, the next person you meet that you do not pre-judge negatively could be someone important in your life.
